Welcome to the Science Center of St. Louis! The Center began in 1856 when the St. Louis Academy of Science was founded as the first scientific community west of the Mississippi. Over the years, it has become one of the world’s leading scientific discovery and exploration destinations.
The Museum of Science and Natural History was established in 1959 by the Academy in Clayton’s Oak Knoll Park. In 1971, we joined the Metropolitan Zoological Park & Museum District (ZMD) and operated separately from the Academy. As we expanded, we needed more space. In 1984, we acquired the McDonnell Planetarium from St. Louis.
The St. Louis Science Center was established in 1985 after extensive renovations. The former McDonnell Planetarium housed the center until 1991 when a significant expansion project included the addition of the OMSNIMAX Theater and a connecting bridge.
In 1997, we added a dedicated space for our large traveling exhibitions, showcasing diverse scientific topics. In 2011, we opened our new 13,000-square-foot “Boeing Hall” for traveling exhibitions, featuring interactive displays and immersive experiences. In 2016, we opened GROW—a permanent exhibit concentrated on the journey of food from farm to fork—taking over the space formerly occupied by the EXPLOURADOME. GROW offers visitors a unique perspective on the global food system and the importance of sustainable agriculture.
We are proud to be a Smithsonian Affiliate Institution and the American Alliance Of Museums (AAMC) and to have received the Roy L. Schafer Leading Edge Award for Excellence in Science Education.
