Despite many setbacks, such as a tornado and financial difficulties, the archbishop was determined to see the cathedral built. He even bequeathed his fortune to the building fund when he passed away. The cornerstone was laid in 1907, but it wasn’t until 1908 that the cathedral was fully built. Construction continued for 80 years before the cornerstone was laid in 1908.
George Barnett, the architect, envisioned a unique design for the cathedral, a fusion of the Byzantine and Romanesque styles. This distinctive blend of architectural elements sets the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica apart. The Kilgen organ, a testament to the cathedral’s musical heritage, was installed in 1915.
